Master of Laws in Human Rights
Course Aims:
The degree of Master of Laws in Human Rights is offered by the Faculty of Law as a response to the increasing interest in and relevance of human rights standards in Asia and elsewhere. The program focuses on problems and perspectives which are of particular concern to the Asia-Pacific region, while at the same time ensuring that participants engage with universal human rights issues and the perspectives of other regional systems.
The programme requires approximately 300 hours of class time. Participants are required to complete a total of eight one-unit courses, including four compulsory one-unit courses, of which a one-unit dissertation or one-unit written project (although permission may be sought to submit a two-unit dissertation or written project in its place) is required. Participants may choose the remaining three (or in some cases, two) one-unit courses from among the courses offered by the Faculty of Law for the LLM programme in Human Rights or, with the approval of the Programme Director and the Taught Postgraduate Degrees Committee, from other courses offered within the Faculty or by other faculties within The University of Hong Kong.

Entrance Requirements:
(1) A degree of Bachelor of Laws with good honours or an equivalent qualification; or
(2) Having been admitted to the professional practice of law in Hong Kong or in a territory or country other than Hong Kong; or
(3) Having obtained either the Common Professional Examination of England and Wales or the Common Professional Examination Certificate of this University with good results, provided that in either case the candidate has also obtained at least a second class honours degree of this University or from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose; or
(4) In the case of admission to the Master of Laws in Human Rights or the Master of Laws in Corporate and Financial Law or the Master of Laws in Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law programmes only, hold another degree in a discipline other than law with at least second class honours or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose and provided that the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee is satisfied that by reason of candidate's background, experience and professional qualifications, if any, the candidate is fit to follow the programme.
(5) Applicants who do not have a bachelor's degree with English as the medium of instruction are required to satisfy the English language proficiency on the basis of one of the following recognized English tests:
(i) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) A score of 593 or above (paper-based test) or 97 or above (internet-based test)
(ii) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Band 7 with no subtest lower than 6.5
The Sohmen Human Rights Scholarships:
Through the generosity of Dr Helmut Sohmen, we are able to offer a limited number of scholarships for suitably qualified candidates for the LL.M in Human Rights. The Sohmen Human Rights Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Past Sohmen Scholars have come from countries throughout the Asian region including Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, India, Mainland China, and Fiji.
