Research interests

  • Paul’s research interests centre on the influence of law on financial sector location choice and agglomeration, the laws of financial markets and organised exchanges, institutional influences on contracting, transaction innovation and customary market practice, and the law and practice of sovereign debt.
  • “The Place of Law: Institutional influences on financial sector agglomeration and location choice” (2017) is a study of how the law influences financial centre development or decay, and proposes an explanation in commercial law for clustering behaviour by financial intermediaries, and for the development of substantive financial hubs. The Place of Law includes aspects of legal and financial history, the laws of organised markets, and economic geography, and draws on the methodology of the legal origins school and the relational contract theory of the late Ian Macneil to explain how the law supports clustering in financial hubs.

He is a Visiting Research Fellow, ICMA Centre, Henley Business School, University of Reading.
