Allard School of Law at UBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.law.hku.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/default-allard-hall-social-card.jpg\" alt=\"peter a allard school of law\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" \/><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The international nature of many legal transactions today has created a demand for lawyers who can practice in multiple jurisdictions.\u00a0 Such lawyers are prized by law firms and corporate law departments. Hence, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) have established the joint legal education programme since 2009 that opens doors for candidates, who successfully complete the programme to practice law in both Canada and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p><u>PROGRAMME STRUCTURE<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Under this joint LLB-JD programme, a student will be able to complete 2 degrees in two jurisdictions in a total of 5 years.\u00a0 Students who have successfully completed 180 HKU credits^ by their third year of study\u00a0in the manner specified as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">(i) for admission before 2024\/25 cohort: 126 credits of the compulsory core, 6 credits of Designed Research Course (DRC) requirement and 48 credits of university required courses;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">(ii) for admission in 2024\/25 cohort and thereafter: 114 credits of the compulsory core, 6 credits of DRC requirement, 12 credits of disciplinary electives and 48 credits of university required courses; and<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">(iii) achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.1<\/p>\n<p>are eligible to apply for this two-year programme at UBC. This joint LLB-JD programme will allow students to pursue professional qualification studies in both Hong Kong and British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum structure will be as follows:<\/p>\n<div>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th width=\"30%\"><u>Year of study<\/u><\/th>\n<th width=\"50%\"><u>Host institution<\/u><\/th>\n<th width=\"20%\"><u>Study load<\/u><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Year 1<\/td>\n<td>HKU<\/td>\n<td>60 HKU credits<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Year 2<\/td>\n<td>HKU<\/td>\n<td>60 HKU credits<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Year 3<\/td>\n<td>HKU<\/td>\n<td>60 HKU credits<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Year 4<\/td>\n<td>UBC<\/td>\n<td>30 UBC credits<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Year 5<\/td>\n<td>UBC<\/td>\n<td>30 UBC credits<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em><u>Notes<\/u><\/em><em>:<u><\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Upon successful completion of the two year of JD study at UBC, students will obtain HKU LLB and UBC JD respectively from HKU and UBC.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Students may apply for the PCLL programme^ to pursue the qualification in Hong Kong as a barrister or solicitor.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>^\u00a0<em>For the purpose of PCLL admission, students must satisfactorily complete Evidence I (or Evidence II) and Land law III (for students admitted before 2024\/25 cohort) on top of the 180 HKU credits.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><u>QUOTA OF ADMISSION<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Up to\u00a0<strong>five<\/strong>\u00a0students may be admitted to the programme each year.<\/p>\n<p><u>APPLICATION PROCESS<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The following required documents must be submitted to UBC by\u00a0the application deadline of <strong>January 31<\/strong>\u00a0of the application year for consideration:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hku.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/HKU-Application-Procedures-and-Application-Form-2026.pdf\">The completed application form<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A Personal Statement<br \/>\n\u2013 Your Personal Statement is an essay of no more than 750 words.<br \/>\n\u2013 The contents of your statement should outline those features about yourself that distinguish you from other candidates and\/or anything you feel is relevant to your application including highlights about your non-academic achievements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Transcripts<br \/>\n\u2013 You must make arrangements with every post-secondary institution you have attended (with the exception of UBC), to have official transcripts sent directly to the UBC Allard School of Law.\u00a0 This includes transcripts from any Universities or Colleges attended on exchange and the HKU Law School.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u2013 Transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by a notarized English translation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Two Academic Letters of Reference<\/li>\n<li>Letter of Permission<br \/>\n&#8211; You must submit a letter of permission from HKU indicating that you have met the HKU requirements to participate in the joint program and that you are in good standing.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To facilitate consideration of application, please submit items 1-4 to our Faculty Office (10\/F Cheng Yu Tung Tower)\u00a0<strong>2 weeks\u00a0before the application deadline, i.e. no later than mid-January, for review<\/strong>.\u00a0 If your application has been endorsed, the Faculty Office will return the submitted documents together with the Letter of Permission to you.\u00a0 Please arrange the full sets of documents (1 &#8211; 5 above) to be sent to The Peter A.
