HKU-PKU Dual Degree Programme in Law

Students who have already submitted applications for admission in 2019 via JUPAS or Non-JUPAS and who have listed the University of Hong Kong (HKU) LLB programme (JUPAS Code JS6406 or Non-JUPAS code 6406) as one of their Band A choices (for JUPAS) or as one of the five choices (for Non-JUPAS) may apply for admission to the HKU-PKU Dual Degree Programme in Law (the Programme).

Programme Information

This new dual degree of Bachelor of Laws at HKU and of Bachelor of Laws at PKU shall normally require ten semesters of full-time study, i.e five years of study.  Students in the dual degree programme spend the first two and half years at HKU or PKU respectively and a further two and half years at the other University. Upon successful completion of the whole programme at both HKU & PKU, candidates will be awarded the HKU LLB and PKU LLB degrees separately by HKU and PKU respectively. Students admitted by HKU shall follow the following tentative syllabus:

First Year (66 credits)
48 credits in Professional law courses
12 credits in language
6 credits in Common Core course

Second Year (72 credits)
54 credits in Professional law courses
12 credits in disciplinary electives
6 credits in Common Core course

Third Year (first semester) (36 credits)
12 credits in Professional law courses
24 credits in disciplinary electives

Third Year (second semester), Fourth and Fifth year (at PKU)
a) Common and Foundational Courses: 38 credits
        i. University-wide Compulsory Common Education Courses: 18 credits
        ii. Disciplinary Foundational Courses: 20 credits
b) Disciplinary Compulsory courses: 38 credits
c) Disciplinary Elective courses: 15 credits
d) Graduation Internship: 2 credits
e) Graduation Dissertation: 3 credits

Admissions

Hong Kong applicants1 or Mainland applicants for the Programme are required to apply via either HKU Law or PKU Law respectively using the relevant admissions processes for each university. Highly proficient in both spoken and written Chinese (Putonghua) and English is a must.

Admission to this rigorous, challenging and demanding programme will be highly selective. Both HKU and PKU will start with a  small intake for each university when it is first launched in September 2019. Only applicants who have listed the HKU LLB Programme in one of their Band A choices via JUPAS (JUPAS Code JS6406) or in one of the five choices2 via Non-JUPAS (Non-JUPAS code 6406) and have a valid Home Return Permit by Sept 1, 2019, can apply for the Programme via HKU.

1 Students must hold a valid Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents (Home Return Permit) and are not a student from Macau. 
2 Candidates who put 6406 as their first choice programme shall be given preference for consideration.

Applications

Both JUPAS applicants and non-JUPAS applicants should apply separately through the Faculty of Law online application  system at https://www.law.hku.hk/hkupku/. There is no separate JUPAS or non-JUPAS code for the HKU-PKU Dual Degree Programme in Law.

In addition to the online application, applicants are required to submit a separate 400-word personal statement for the Programme in both English and Chinese through the online application system.

Applications for the Programme via the Faculty of Law online application system will close at 23:59 (Hong Kong Time) on June 30, 2019.  Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a panel interview in early August 2019. 

Late applications will not be considered. Applicants who have applied for the Programme and for the HKU LLB programme will be considered for both programmes. To facilitate the consideration of the Admissions Committee of the HKU Law Faculty, JUPAS and non-JUPAS applicants are encouraged to arrange for their academic reference and related supporting documents for the Programme to be emailed to  by 23:59 (Hong Kong time) on July 12, 2019.   All correspondence from applicants regarding the Programme should state the applicant’s full name and JUPAS/Non-JUPAS application number.
