Dr Jiapei Tao 陶加培博士

Biography

Jiapei Tao is a Post-Doctoral Fellow specialising in criminal justice, digital justice, and public interest litigation. His research interests lie in the areas of negotiated justice in criminal proceedings, the disposal of assets in criminal cases, and public interest litigation concerning digital rights. In 2024, he was awarded grants from the National Social Science Fund of China  and the Ministry of Education of China (Social Sciences Research Youth Fund Project).

Prior to joining the Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Tao was an Assistant Research Fellow at Guanghua Law School, Zhejiang University. In that capacity, he collaborated on various research initiatives with Professor Ming Hu and supported the academic activities of the China Association Of Criminal Procedure Law and its Criminal Defense Committee. Since 2021, he has served as a Researcher at the Center for Basic Prosecutorial Theory at Zhejiang University, where his work has led to publications on the disposal of criminally-involved assets, prosecutorial public interest litigation, and the impact of digital technology on judicial reform. He also has prior experience as a Judicial Assistant in the Criminal Division of the Supreme People’s Court of China, assisting judges in reviewing death penalty cases.

Jiapei holds a Ph.D. in Laws from the China University of Political Science and Law. He completed both his Master of Laws and Bachelor of Laws at Hainan University. He was named an Outstanding Graduate of Beijing and was awarded the National Graduate Scholarship for two consecutive years. Additionally, he passed the Chinese Judicial Examination and is qualified to practice as a lawyer.
