When Research Security Becomes National Security: Charting a Path for Innovation and Protection

12 Nov 2025 (Wednesday)

16:30 PM – 17:30 PM (HKT)

Academic Conference Room, 11/F, Cheng Yu Tung Tower, HKU

The Trump administration declared that “economic security is national security,” echoing statements during the Biden administration that “We must make the case for economic security as a matter of national security.”

As the definitional lines between national and economic security blur, research security has also been prominent in the mix. What is the relationship among national, economic, and research security? How can the U.S. maintain talent flows and cross-country collaborative research when academics with foreign ties are under intense scrutiny?

This talk will explore efforts in the United States through the National Science Foundation’s SECURE program (Safeguarding the Entire Community of the U.S. Research Ecosystem) and other initiatives to chart a path that both promotes innovation and protects national security.
