About the Symposium:

In an era marked by escalating conflicts and social strife, the need for effective frameworks that intertwine conflict prevention and resolution with robust rights protection and social welfare has never been more critical. This roundtable aims to explore the multidimensional interface between these foundational elements, fostering dialogue among scholars, practitioners, and policymakers.


About the Speakers:

Frauke Nitschke is Team Leader, International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). She joined ICSID in September 2003.
Ms. Nitschke holds law degrees from the Freie Universität Berlin (Staatsexamen), Georgetown University Law Center (LL.M.), and a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology focusing on Alternative Dispute Resolution from the FernUniversität Hagen. She is an accredited mediator and admitted to practice law in the State of New York and Washington, D.C.

 

Sarah Federman, an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies, is the author of the award-winning Transformative Negotiation: Strategies for Everyday Change and Equitable Futures (University of California Press 2023) named by FORBES as one of the top 10 negotiation books. She also wrote the Nautilus award-winning book Last Train to Auschwitz: The French National Railways and the Journey to Accountability (University of Wisconsin 2021).

 

Teresa Cheng is Secretary-General, International Organization for Mediation (IOMed). She is a Senior Counsel, Chartered Engineer, Chartered Arbitrator and Mediator, with a distinguished record of public service in the Hong Kong SAR. From January 2018 to June 2022, Professor Cheng was the Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong SAR. She specialises in a wide range of legal areas, including construction, international commercial contracts and investment arbitration, and is an experienced practitioner in international arbitration and mediation. She is frequently engaged as counsel or arbitrator in complex international commercial/investment disputes. [TBC]
