Economic Development Models and Democratic Backsliding in East Asia

Abstract:
This project explores ways in which the development pathways followed by Korea and Taiwan prior to democratization have affected their ability to maintain the democracies they have achieved. Contrasts are drawn with the development experiences of countries and regions that have experienced democratic backsliding, and possible implications for current development policies are suggested.

Professor Ohnesorge is the George Young Bascom Professor of Business Law at the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he teaches Business Organizations and Administrative Law, as well as seminars in Compliance, Law and Development, and Chinese Law. He is the Director of the East Asian Legal Studies Center, Senior Advisor to the Graduate Program, founder and director of the Compliance Initiative, and former Chair of the Wisconsin China Initiative (2008-2012). He received his B.A. from St. Olaf College, his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School, and his S.J.D. from Harvard Law School. He has spent several years in East Asia, as a teacher and law student in Shanghai in the 1980s, as a lawyer in private practice in Seoul in the 1990s, and as a visiting scholar at Seoul National University in 2017. He is spending 2023 as a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar at Yonsei University in Seoul.
