About the Speaker:
Gökçe serves as Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), where she administers complex international arbitration cases. Prior to joining the PCA, she represented clients in investor-State and commercial disputes spanning construction, life sciences, and post-M&A matters at leading law firms in Istanbul, Washington, D.C., and London. Her work covered proceedings under major arbitral frameworks, including the ICC, ICSID, LCIA, and UNCITRAL Rules. She also served as Counsel at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), overseeing hundreds of commercial arbitrations involving parties across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including disputes with China-nexus. Earlier in her career, she completed internships at ICSID in Washington, D.C and ICC Paris.

About the talk:
This presentation will examine the role of arbitral tribunals in the resolution of international trade and commercial disputes. Drawing on the historical development of international arbitration and the evolution of arbitral institutions, including the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the world’s oldest intergovernmental institution dedicated to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, the session will explore how arbitral tribunals are constituted and operate in practice.
The discussion will consider the appointment of arbitrators under different arbitral rules and institutional frameworks, the role of appointing authorities and administering institutions, and the principal functions of arbitral tribunals throughout the arbitral process. Drawing on examples from contemporary practice, the presentation will provide students with an introduction to the legal and practical considerations that shape the resolution of international trade and commercial disputes through arbitration.
