HKU-Pepperdine Cross-Pacific Dialogue on Law, Economics & Innovation

The Faculty is delighted to co-organize with HKU Business School and the HKU Business School Alumni Association a special high-level event  “HKU-Pepperdine Cross-Pacific Dialogue on Law, Economics & Innovation” on 24 April 2026. Bringing together expert perspectives from law, economics, innovation, public policy, and higher education, the Dialogue offered valuable insights into Asia’s evolving role in an increasingly complex and fragmented global landscape, as well as high-level HKU–US academic collaboration, and attracted over 100 attendees.

The event featured a Fireside Chat on International Law and Global Economics, as well as a Panel Discussion: Venture Capital, Universities, and Geopolitics: Navigating Innovation Between Hong Kong, the US and Asia.

We were honoured to have the following fireside chat speakers:

  • President Jim Gash, Pepperdine University
  • Prof. Hualing Fu, Dean, HKU Faculty of Law
  • Prof. Heiwai Tang, Associate Vice-President (Global), HKU and Associate Dean (External Relations), HKU Business School

Our heartfelt thanks also go to the following panel speakers:

  • Prof. Kenneth Wong, Director and Kerry Group Professor in Public Policy, HKU School of Governance and Policy
  • Prof. Jason Woodard, Co-Director, HKU School of Innovation
  • Mr. Fred Li, Managing Director and Head of University Ventures, Gobi Partners (HKU Business School alumnus)
  • Mr. Nicky Mac Cullum, Venture Partner, Elaphurus Capital (Pepperdine alumnus)
  • Mr. Beaux Pontak, Managing Director, Deutsche Bank (Pepperdine alumnus & moderator)

It was a rare chance to engage directly with leading academics from both sides of the Pacific and we look forward to our next dialogue.
