Abstract:
The lecture is based on Professor Xu’s new book “The Idea of China: A Contested History,” published by Harvard University Press recently. This talk will focus on the question about the idea of China as a constitutional agenda in modern China. Through the perspective of the twisted history of constitution-making, Professor Xu will explore the challenges in shaping the idea of China constitutionally.
Speaker:
Prof. Guoqi Xu is David Chang Professor of History and the founding director of the Institute of the Transnational History of China, The University of Hong Kong. He is the author of the following books in English: The Idea of China: A Contested History (Harvard UP), Asia and the Great War: A Shared History (Oxford UP), Chinese and Americans: a Shared History (Harvard UP), Strangers on the Western Front: Chinese Workers and the Great War (Harvard UP), Olympic Dreams: China and sports (Harvard UP), and China and the Great War (Cambridge UP). Professor Xu also publishes widely in Chinese.
