Abstract:
Thecollection, accumulation and aggregation of very large datasets of medicalinformation for ‘Big Data’ mining applications and analysis is assuming acentral role in biomedical research. Concurrently, researchers throughout the world are also seeking ways toshare medical, genetic and genomic information both nationally as well asacross borders: researchers ultimatelywork with data, and pure information in digital form is often subject to fewerregulatory restrictions on movements across borders, or between groups ofresearchers. This workshop seeks toexamine the impact of such new technologies on current regulatory paradigms forthe protection of privacy of individuals, and as well as regulatory responsesfor data protection and data-sharing in the context of biomedicalresearch. Approaches in some keyjurisdictions of relevance to Hong Kong are compared, and the likely shape offuture regulatory responses in this area explored.
