Street Law in Asia: “Best Practices in Community Legal Education” Workshop

This workshop is hosted by the Centre for Comparative and Public Law in collaboration with Monash University and Pennsylvania State University.
Across the world, Street Law programmes have demonstrated capacity to change traditional forms of law teaching, meet unmet legal needs in the community, instil a sense of public service in law students, and strengthen collaboration among universities, the legal profession and the community.
What is Street Law? The term “Street Law” covers a variety of community legal education programmes and curriculums that share a common goal and method:
1. Street Law programmes use interactive methods to engage community members in practical law lessons.
2. Street Law programmes provide an opportunity for law students and pro bono lawyers to contribute to the community through meaningful collaborations focused on strengthening legal literacy.

What is the objective of the workshop? The 2-day workshop aims to unite, engage and support law teachers/clinical programme coordinators, pro bono lawyers and community-based organisations to implement, support and improve new and existing Street Law programmes. The workshop will provide a best practices framework for Street Law methodologies and for the design, development and implementation of new programmes.
Who should join? The workshop will be valuable for law teachers/clinical programme coordinators, pro bono lawyers and community-based organisations currently involved in community legal education or seeking to develop community legal education programmes.
Why should you join? The workshop will strengthen participants’ ability to prepare students, pro bono lawyers and community partners for engagement in Street Law programmes. Participants will share their own ideas and experiences and learn from each other.
The workshop will draw upon the tremendous experience of session facilitators coming from different parts of the world, including Dr. Jeff Giddings from Monash University, Professor Richard Roe from Georgetown University’s Street Law Clinic, Assistant Professor Efrain Marimon from Pennsylvania State University, and Professor Catherine Klein from Catholic University of America.
