Biography
Dr. Derek Ritzmann is an economist and a lawyer. He practices in areas where law and economics intersect, in particular in the areas of competition law and regulation.
As an economist, Derek holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics. As a lawyer, Derek holds LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from the University of Melbourne and a Postgraduate Diploma from King’s College, London. He is admitted to practice law in England and Wales, New York, Ireland, Australia, and was formerly a Registered Foreign Lawyer in Hong Kong.
Derek currently practices as an economic consultant and expert witness with an Asia Pacific-focused, Hong Kong-based specialist consulting firm. He previously spent over a decade in government, in senior positions in competition and regulatory agencies. He was the first Chief Economist of the Hong Kong Competition Commission, in which position he helped to establish this new agency. He was also in the Chief Economist Team at the European Commission’s Competition Directorate, and Principal Economist at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. He has consulted to and advised the Asian Development Bank, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and many national competition authorities including those of the European Commission, India, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Peru, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore. In previous private practice, he headed the Asia-Pacific practice of a large U.S.-based economic consulting firm, practiced with a leading consulting firm in Europe, as a competition lawyer in Australia with a leading firm, and as a consultant to a Hong Kong law firm. He is listed in the Who’s Who Legal Directory as a Competition Economist.
