CCPL Milestones Series: LGBTQI+ Rights in Hong Kong: Steps Forward and Open Questions

LGBTQI+ Rights in Hong Kong: Steps Forward and Open Questions (CCPL Milestones Series)

In November 2024, the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal delivered two decisions that are crucial for the equality of LGBTQI+ people: Housing Authority v Infinger & Li [2024] HKCFA 29, which addressed the housing rights of same-sex couples, and Li Yik Ho v Secretary for Justice [2024] HKCFA 30 concerning their inheritance rights. These judgments have significantly strengthened the constitutional rights of same-sex couples in Hong Kong, marking a major step forward in their legal recognition and protection.

This seminar will bring together academics, advocates, and members of the legal community to reflect on the achievement of these landmark rulings. Discussions will focus on their impact on Hong Kong law, the broader implications for the equality of sexual minorities, and the effects on society and business. Additionally, the seminar will address the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQI+ individuals and the future prospects for their rights in Hong Kong.

This seminar is the first of the CCPL Milestones Series, which is aimed at discussing pivotal public law developments in Hong Kong.
