Digital assets in capital markets are assets issued and transferred using blockchain. Blockchain is clearly set to have an exceptional impact on the future of the world economy. Even though blockchain is best known for underpinning the operation of crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, this technology can be used in countless other areas, such as banking, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), healthcare, smart contracts, financial services, supply chain management, insurance, IoT, and video games, for example. It is important that digital assets and cryptocurrencies are not the same. It is important to understand that although all cryptocurrencies are digital assets, not all digital assets are cryptocurrencies. The speaker will provide an introduction to blockchain technology and one of its main applications, crypto currencies, before concluding with an analysis of how digital assets are taxed in Hong Kong.
