Peter Goodrich, who is Professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York, visited the Faculty of Law as the Sin Wai-Kin Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Humanities. His lecture, entitled ‘Faces and Frames of Government’, examined the crucial, but often overlooked, visual dimension of the law. Professor Goodrich’s lecture was a lively and thought-provoking intellectual tour through American case law, illustrations in fifteenth-century legal textbooks, and twenty-first century Italian cinema. He concluded that lawyers needed to cultivate their skills in visual analysis, and to pay attention to imago decidendi and obiter depicta in addition to the more familiar legal rules and principles.
